The Art and Science of Typing

Learning your Enneagram Type is the first step to coaching at your full range. We offer two pathways to learning your type, both of which are compatible with coaching best practices and ethics.

Personality typing is personal

We believe that you alone are the ultimate author of your life and no one is better qualified to determine your Enneagram type than you. Our typing services put you squarely in the driver’s seat.

Method 1: Typing Interview

Our preferred method to get to your type is with our Typing Interview. This is a live, 60-minute session with Cai or Monique where we ask you questions pertinent to each type. At the end of the interview, we present you with 2-3 “hypotheses” of what your type may be and corroborate these with your answers to the interview questions. This is followed by a conversation that leads to you choosing your Enneagram Type. We give you exercises to test your Type theory “in the wild”.

We recommend this option for most people as we can take more into account than your answers to the questions. We are able to pick up on nuances that give us - and you - a more complete picture.

Method 2: Online Assessment + Interpretation Session

Online Enneagram typing assessments offer unmatched convenience, and the best ones provide a detailed, downloadable report packed with rich information about your type. Our preferred online assessment is the Integrative9 Enneagram Questionnaire (iEQ9). When you select this option, you’ll receive a link to complete your iEQ9. Then we set up a 60-minute session where we walk you through your report.

We recommend this option for coaches on the go who want a detailed report and a fairly accurate answer about their type - the iEQ9 is about 85% accurate (which is pretty good for an online assessment).

Have you already discovered your Enneagram type and feel a need to deepen your understanding of what it all means and how to use that information? Perhaps you think, feel, or behave differently than what the description of your type may tell you. Or maybe you feel like the assessment was just plain wrong! There are a lot of reasons you might feel this way and they are all legitimate. What you need is a guide to help you navigate the ins and outs of the Enneagram system so you can choose powerfully what fits and what doesn’t. However you came upon your current theory of your type, we can help you gain clarity.

We recommend this option for people who have already taken an online Enneagram assessment or completed a typing interview with us or with another coach/practitioner and don’t need full-on coaching.

FAQs

  • Enneagram typing is unique among other personality systems in that we discern personality at the level of motivation, and not observable behavior. It takes training, skill, and experience to get to that level and discern one’s qualities and characteristics so that a clear picture of motivation emerges. Other considerations are subtypes, “look-alike” types, and stress levels. We cover all that in InsightOut (so sign up!).

  • The short answer is “no”. Teaching typing is no small task and one that takes tons of study and practice. Some of you have received training as iEQ9 practitioners - this is a great way to begin typing your clients. If you want to learn how to do typing interviews like we do, visit the Narrative Enneagram (www.narrativeenneagram.org).

  • Assuming you are not already iEQ9 certified, there are a number of options available to you. One option is to hire Cai or Mo for a Typing Interview or iEQ9 assessment and debrief. Of course, there are other online typing options available and once you’ve completed InsightOut, you’ll be able to provide clearer interpretation and coaching around their type.
